Matt Gershun is a drummer & multi-instrumentalist, composer, recording artist, and educator.  He brings a joyous spirit to his playing, infusing his music with warmth and lyricism. Raised in the seaside town of Marblehead, Massachusetts, Matt grew up listening to the analog sounds of the ’90s. Later influences would include the legends of Motown, Funk, Soul, Blues, Jazz, Rock & Roll, and Afrobeat. Drawing from these diverse musical influences, Matt has a melodic sound that evokes the past and the present.

Matt has performed with James Massone from NBC’s The Voice and The Metropolitan Baptist Church Gospel Choir of Dorchester. He has toured the U.S. with indie-rock band, Quiet Loudly and is also featured on albums by GhostFlowers, Birches, & Action Verbs.

Matt is the founder of the Matt Gershun Music Academy. He has also been a featured educator in participation with Spotify, The Jazz Educators Network, and has led social outreach workshops with the Fundacion Danilo Pérez of Panama. He has worked as an Ensemble Director and Private Instructor at the School of Rock and has presented workshops on Drum Tuning & Self Expression at the Berklee Global Jazz Institute. In all educational settings, Matt brings over 20 years of teaching, recording, and performing experience to the classroom, providing real-world guidance and wisdom to his students about artistry, song-writing, arranging, group dynamics, self-expression, musicality, and audio production. 

Today, Matt works in upstate NY, composing, recording, and teaching. In 2021, Matt earned his Master’s degree in Jazz Performance from the acclaimed Berklee Global Jazz Institute. There, he received mentorship from artists Danilo Perez, John Patitucci, Kenny Werner, Joe Lovano, and many other titans of the Jazz world. Prior to Berklee, Matt studied privately with master drummers, Ralph Peterson Jr, Bob Gullotti, and Jon Hazilla.
